Reflecting on the Classroom: My Collective Teaching Experience

Stepping into the classroom as a pre-service teacher is always a mix of anticipation and excitement. My recent teaching stint provided a wealth of insights as I navigated different year levels, adapted to diverse mathematical concepts, and connected with students across grades 7, 8, and 10.
Here is a look back at the key moments and lessons from this rewarding collective teaching experience.
Setting the Foundation: Meeting My Mentor

Every great teaching experience starts with strong guidance. Meeting my mentor, Ma’am Aisha, immediately set a positive and supportive tone for the weeks ahead. She welcomed me warmly and generously provided the essential textbooks and reference materials I would need to align my lectures with the curriculum. Having her expertise to lean on gave me the confidence to map out my lessons effectively.
Navigating the Grade Levels: The Lectures
Untangling Radicals with Grade 8
My first instructional hurdle began with Grade 8, focusing on the Form of Roots and Operations Involving Roots. Introducing radical expressions requires breaking down abstract rules into logical steps. Students initially wrestled with identifying perfect roots, but through guided practice, they began to see the underlying patterns.
I returned to Grade 8 for a later lecture to tackle the continuation of operations on roots, focusing specifically on multiplication and division. This phase demanded strict attention to detail, especially when multiplying coefficients versus radicands and rationalizing denominators. Watching the students transition from confusion to correctly simplifying complex radical expressions was incredibly satisfying.

Stepping into Data with Grade 10
Switching gears conceptually, I moved to Grade 10 for an Introduction to Statistics. Moving away from algebra and into data analysis allowed for a highly interactive atmosphere. We explored how statistics applies to real-world decision-making, defining key concepts and discussing how data is collected and organized. The students engaged deeply, realizing that math extends far beyond the textbook into everyday logic.

Graphing Boundaries with Grade 7
The final piece of this teaching cycle was with Grade 7, where the topic was Linear Inequalities in Two Variables. Teaching inequalities is always a unique challenge because students must shift their mindset from finding a single exact answer (like an equation) to identifying an entire region of possibilities. We focused on understanding boundary lines, deciding when to use dashed versus solid lines, and mastering the "test point" shading method to find the solution sets.

The Takeaway: Teaching across multiple grade levels in a short span requires immense adaptability. From the foundational algebraic rules of Grade 7 inequalities to the data-driven concepts of Grade 10 statistics, this experience reinforced a timeless truth: a lesson succeeds when complex ideas are broken down into digestible, relatable steps.
